  1. I came to Bristol in 1983 as a student at the University. I was already a member of a marching band - the Jewish Lads' and Girls' Brigade Brass Band in London. I had heard great things about the Bristol Unicorns and wanted to learn more.

Dave Rogers invited me to participate as a guest member, and that I did for nearly 3 years. Although I was really only a guest, I did get to participate in a few of the contests, and although I wasn't in the one at the top here, I do remember this display and how great it was to be associated with such a superb band. I also had a lot of fun mixing with the band members. I was teased quite a lot, probably because I was the only male clarinetist at the time, and it took a while to fit in, however at the end I think I had done so.

After I left University, I went back to London and after a couple of years I got the opportunity to take over as joint band commander of the Jewish Lads' and Girls' Brigade Brass Band. I could not have done this without the inspiration and lessons learned from the Bristol Unicorns.

Now I live in the USA, and am married, with five adorable young children. Priorities and lifestyles change and I'll probably never lead or participate in a marching band again, however this web site brings back great memories. Thanks Steve for creating this web site and for posting these videos.

  2. Hi Barry,

Thanks for your comments and it's good to hear from you. I remember you marching and will be posting some of the shows you took part in at some point.

Hopefully we didn't tease you too much, and I'm glad to hear you are doing so well.

    All the best,

    Steve

  3. Thanks Steve. Do you have any concert recordings - especially my favorite, Hootenanny?

  4. Hi Barry, I'm not aware of any concert recordings other than the old records and the tape we also produced. If only we had the technology back then that we do these days (mp3, mpg), we'd have loads to choose from. If anything does emerge I'll post it here, so keep popping back every now and then to see what's surfaced.
